![]() some brands of cast pistons dont have enough material left after flycutting and are too weak in the crown or ringland area. cast 3tc pistons need flycutting for 2tg useĤ. you must use 3tc pistons with 3tc crankģ. you must use 2tg pistons with 2tg crankĢ. Many oversize premade with different compression volumes ($600)Ģtg hybrids ie a 3tg (3tc crank and 3tc pistons)ġ. Some oversize premade with different compression volumes (rare but obtainable) Oversize either +20 or +40 thou (ie 0.5 or 1mm) (rare if even avaliable?) Or should i just bit the bullet and get forged. If i go cast again then could some suggest what i could have done wrong to cause this. Has anyone been able to get some for a 3TC. Haven't been unable to track down any hyper eutectic piston. So at the current situation my options are Get the same pistons again or forged. Ignition timing was set less then Factory at 13 degrees. Cam grind used was Camtech 401A 293 duration 241 and 372 lift 50. Exhaust was 2 degrees (due to my incorrect timing of using Factory marks and not dialing in). The Inlet cam timimg turned out to be roughtly 10 Crank degrees retarded. The piston failed on the ring land between 1 and 2 about 1/3 of the piston had cracks and lose pieces. Well the engine never sounded to be pinging. Ok now your probably going to say a tuning problem, timing (cam or ignition). But unless I'm mistake forged piston can't be fitted to factory 2TG rods. So done some research to discover Hyper eutectic Piston are meant to be stronger. Destroyed pistons in 6000km normal Endurotech piston fly cut to suit of coarse. I thought this project was way too cool not to share.OK quick question Currently build a 2tg/3t hybrid engine. There are a few holes on the bottom of the head to fill and then it has to be drilled and tapped for the oil return lines. While that is happening I have to weld an extension onto the the BMW head and then machine the cam belt side flat. At that point the block goes off to Springer Performance to be bored out for the new pistons and zero decked. What is left? after the holes are filled and the surface is flycut I will drill the new pattern and tap the necessary holes for the new head studs. Tomorrow I will heat up the parts washer and give it a good degreasing and loctite the threaded slugs in place. So as of today the block has had all of the holes to be filled drilled and tapped. Some of the holes were already the perfect tap drill size. I had originally planned on using a plugs of 5 different sizes ranging from 5/16" to 9/16" but in process I decided that was probably overkill and went with 9/16"-18, 1/2"-20 and 3/8"-24. Should be everything I need.įirst step was to identify all the holes that need to be filled and drill them out. This cart is loaded down with all the bits.Īn ECU system for the injection, A pretty little stainless header, A beautiful forged crank with a $3400 invoice still in the box with it. Tim got the kit in a large lot of mini stuff he bought years ago and it languished in a friends machine shop for 18 months waiting for him to "get around to it" I have been fascinated by this swap since I first heard about it in the late 90's.
